Panel Reflection
My panel experience wasn’t very informational. Most of the time during panel the panel members were mainly deliberating on my Essential Question. They made me re-word it, then told me everything was good the way I had it. I wish next time they would’ve helped me more with my actual project like suggestions for the ACP or suggestions for starting my research.
ACP Reflection
My plan for my ACP was to go around the school and ask various student a quick selection of questions pertaining to African American males and education. The objective is to see what students know about high school dropouts. I wanted to know what their thoughts are on why African American males dropout from high school. I was looking for personal opinions, ideas, and just to see what they know on the subject. I first had to prepare myself by making sure I knew what I was talking about myself.
I did my research and once I felt as though I knew the majority of what I wanted to know from the students, I went to Mrs. Smullens’ class and I gave them a survey to answer. The survey was to see what prior knowledge the students had on African American dropouts. After they finished the survey I collected them and to put together all the data. I then gave the class some background information that they might not have already known to inform them and try to motivate them to stay in school and to make better of what they got. Overall, my ACP went very smoothly.
Mrs. Smullens’ class followed the presentation very well and were participating with interest and enthusiasm. Most of the students were raising their hands for everything question and were giving me really good feedback. Everything lived up to my expectations, there was nothing else that i could have asked for out of the class. I feel as though my ACP had a good, strong impact on Mrs. Smullens’ class and that they will take what they learned to better themselves for the future. I think that by hearing how bad things could be for someone after dropping out of high school the kids took it into consideration that school might really be important.
I believe the students will try to work harder in the future and will encourage their friends to do better. If I was to do this ACP over again I would talk to highschool classes as well as middle school. After all my project is about High school students.
